RECCE

Questionnaire to help us chose our music

Below is an example of one of the questionnaire's which were filled out by members of our class.
We created a questionnaire before deciding which song to use as we were interested to know how people feel about the 'Love the way you lie part 1' video that we deconstructed in the previous post.

Research

Deciding what song to choose for our music video was a challenge, as we all have different tastes in music and had to find something we all agreed on, looking also at the lyrics and genre and rhythm of the music to see if we'd be able to make a successful video from it. We also needed to make sure the song didn't already have a video to it, as this was part of our brief.
We came to the conclusion we wanted to use a fairly recent song, with genre r&b/rap as this genre has a high presence in the charts at the moment. Below is a deconstruction of music video for song 'Love the way you lie' by Eminem, which is of the genre we have decided to create a video for.

Creating our music video (Research)

So far, the music videos we have researched have all been filmed with actors portraying roles, and so I’ve looked into alternative ways of producing music videos such as using different types of animation/stop motion technique. The videos below show different ways in which music videos can be made.
The White Stripes - Fell in Love with a Girl
The Smashing Pumpkins - Thirty-Three

Smashing pumpkins- a series of stills put together in a way to look like a movie, showing the stills one after the other creating an illusion of movement.

I have taken a series of photos of someone writing lyrics and put them into windows moviemaker to edit them into an animation, similar to the smashing pumpkins music video. I like this technique as to take the photos themselves is fairly simple, but the outcome is very effective and could look good if the time between each individual image changes to the beat of the music.

38 frames per second is the standard filming times, this means when viewing a recorded clip back, it looks as it did in real life, smooth and not jerky. So by taking a series of singles frames and adding them into an editing programme I can create a traditional ‘movie’, which would look as if it have been filmed on a standard cam-corder, whereas if I change the amount of frames per second I can get a slower, disjointed and sometimes more effective type animation.

Deconstruction of music video

CD Cover deconstructions

First deconstruction

Although we have decided to create a music video for our project, After watching romantic comedy 500 days of summer I picked out a lot of techniques and editing that appealed to me, which could be used in a music video.

Mood Board

A2 Media Studies Brief

Working in small groups we have been asked to create either a short film / film trailer or music video. Along side this we have an ancillary task to complete which includes a poster and CD/DVD cover and booklet.

As a group we have chosen to produce a music video for our A2 production. After discussion we agreed it is the best field to work in for us, as we’re all attracted to the music industry, which means we will be interested when researching. Also, we want to make our production as professional looking as possible, and as we’re not actors it would be hard to do so in a short film or trailer as the use of dialogue is almost essential, and we feel this could let us down and hinder our performance and final outcome.
